What started as a handshake between Paul Mears, Jr. and Henri Landwirth in 1986
has blossomed into an incredible relationship between Mears Transportation and Give
Kids the World. At the Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Florida, children
struggling with life-threatening illnesses and their families enjoy a weeklong,
cost-free vacation that includes accommodations at the Village, meals, donated attraction
tickets and more. Mears provides all of the transportation to the families at no
cost. Since its inception, Give Kids the World has served over 100,000 families
from all 50 states and 70 countries.
Mears is a featured partner in the new “Hall of Heroes” inside the Gallery of Hope
visitor center at the Village. This beautiful new center celebrates and honors the
generosity of the corporate partners and individuals who have helped Give Kids the
World grow into the magical resort it is today. Mears Transportation Group takes
great pride in helping make a difference in the lives of these families.
In 2010, Mears Transportation Group pledged $1 million in memory of company founder
Paul Mears Sr. to support the Orange County Take Stock in Children program. In honor
of Mears, the college renamed its West Campus Student Services Building the Paul
Mears Sr. Student Services Building.
Mears believes strongly in giving every child the tools they need to succeed, and
that begins with a great education. Take Stock in Children of Orange County is part
of a statewide program that provides underserved children with a college scholarship
and a mentor in the effort to help them stay in school, earn a high school diploma,
graduate from college and enter the workforce.
Participating children begin the program in the eighth grade and continue on until
they graduate high school. They must sign performance contracts agreeing to get
good grades, exhibit positive behaviors and remain drug and crime free. In return,
they will receive a 2 + 2 Florida Pre-Paid scholarship, which provides two years
tuition at any community college followed by two years tuition at any state university.
Take Stock in Children students are matched with a Mears volunteer mentor who meets
with the student at his or her school once a week. Mentors work with one student
for an entire school year and may opt to stay with the student throughout their
duration in the program.

In 2009, Mears Transportation Group and Hello Florida joined the March of Dimes
team as a leading sponsor and participant in the annual Walk for Babies. Hundreds
of our employees participate in the family-friendly 5K walk in downtown Orlando
to raise funds for March of Dimes in its quest to prevent premature births in the
United States. The Mears Team has raised more than $35,000 to help find preventions
and solutions for the 120,000 babies born with birth defects in the United States
each year. The walk is a great way to come together as a company and make a difference
in the lives of those who need it most.

On August 14, more than 390 children received much-needed supplies at our 8th Annual School Supply Giveaway. This year's pre-registration process allowed us to shop for each specific child by gender and grade, so we were better able to meet each individual student's needs. Because all supply bags were pre-filled the week before the event, the actual giveaway itself was less hectic and more enjoyable for volunteers and recipients alike. This year’s event also featured a blood drive, free vision screenings and blood pressure checks, face painting by Cookie the Clown and a free book for each child.
